Satanoperca acuticeps
Also known as: Acuticeps Eartheater (Rio Negro), Sharpsnouted Eartheater
Origin: Brazil (Rio Negro)
Satanoperca acuticeps is distinguished from other eartheaters by its notably elongated, pointed snout — a specialisation for probing fine riverbed sediments. The Rio Negro locality form is particularly sought-after, displaying denser and more vivid iridescent spotting on the flanks than populations from harder water drainages. It adapts its pointed snout to searching leaf litter and fine black sand.
As a strict blackwater species, it requires very soft, warm, acidic water maintained with peat, botanicals, or RO water. It is less forgiving of water quality degradation than Geophagus species and demands a consistent maintenance regime. The fine-sand substrate should be deep enough — at least 10 cm — to accommodate its probing behaviour.
A peaceful fish that does well in community setups with other blackwater species. Group living reduces individual stress. This is a species for experienced hobbyists committed to blackwater aquarium keeping at a high level.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 4.5-6.5, very soft (0-4 dGH); blackwater conditions essential; tannins and botanicals beneficial. Tank: Minimum 280L; fine black sand 10+ cm deep, heavy driftwood, botanical cover, dim lighting. Feeding: Sinking granules, live and frozen bloodworm, daphnia, Artemia; probes substrate for food. Breeding: Biparental mouthbrooder; sharp snout used in substrate probing during pre-spawning behaviour. Compatibility: Peaceful; ideal with cardinal tetras, discus, Satanoperca daemon, and gentle catfish.
