Heterotis niloticus
Also known as: African Arowana, African Bonytongue
Origin: Africa
Heterotis niloticus diverges significantly from other arowana in its diet, using gill rakers to filter microorganisms and detritus from the water rather than hunting surface prey. Native to large rivers and floodplains of West and Central Africa, it is a fast-growing, powerful swimmer that requires a very large aquarium. It builds a floating nest from vegetation for spawning.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 6.5-7.5, soft to moderately hard water. Tank: Minimum 700L, very long tank, moderate current, sandy substrate, weighted lid. Feeding: Omnivore; filter-feeds on algae, spirulina powder, fine live foods, quality sinking pellets. Behaviour: Generally peaceful toward large fish but will consume small schooling fish. Compatibility: Large robust African species; large catfish, African barbs, similar-sized cichlids.
