Pantodon buchholzi
Also known as: African Butterfly Fish, Freshwater Butterfly Fish, Pantodont
Origin: Africa (West/Central Africa, Congo, Nigeria)
The African Butterfly Fish (Pantodon buchholzi) is the sole member of the family Pantodontidae — a lineage so ancient and distinct that it represents an evolutionary relic with no close living relatives. Found in the slow, still, and heavily vegetated backwaters of West and Central Africa including the Niger delta, Congo basin, and coastal lagoons of Nigeria and Cameroon, it has remained virtually unchanged for millions of years.
Reaching up to 12 cm in length, the African Butterfly Fish has a flattened dorsal profile perfectly suited to surface predation. Its enormous, wing-like pectoral fins span the width of its body and give it an unmistakable silhouette from above. The coloration is a masterwork of camouflage — mottled browns and greens that mimic dead leaves and debris floating on the surface. Looking down into its natural habitat, this fish is almost impossible to spot.
In the aquarium, it lives exclusively at the surface, hovering motionless for long periods before striking at insects, small fish, or crustaceans that venture too close. It is capable of short gliding leaps from the water surface — a behavior believed to help it escape predators or ambush prey — making a tight-fitting lid absolutely essential.
Despite its fearsome hunting ability, the African Butterfly Fish is generally peaceful toward fish too large to be eaten. Its specialized niche as a surface predator means it rarely interacts with mid-water or bottom-dwelling species. This is a fish for those who appreciate the extraordinary and the ancient.
Tank Setup A minimum of 100 liters with a long footprint and ample surface area is essential. Keep the water level 10–15 cm below the lid to allow natural surface behavior and to prevent escape. A tight-fitting lid is mandatory — this species is an accomplished jumper. Include dense surface vegetation such as Amazon frogbit or water lettuce to give the fish security and simulate its natural environment. Gentle, low-flow filtration is best.
Water Parameters Maintain pH between 6.0 and 7.5 with temperatures of 23°C to 30°C. Soft, warm, slightly acidic water most closely matches natural habitat conditions. Regular water changes of 20–30% weekly are needed.
Diet Primarily accepts surface-dwelling prey: live or frozen insects (crickets, mealworms, flies), earthworms, and small feeder fish. Floating pellets may be accepted by some individuals but live food is strongly preferred. Feed every other day in moderate amounts.
Compatibility Aggressive toward anything that fits in its mouth — avoid small fish, especially at the surface. Safe with robust mid-water and bottom-dwelling species such as larger tetras, medium catfish, and loaches. Avoid other surface-dwelling fish that may compete for space.
Tank Lid This cannot be overstated: a secure, gapless lid is mandatory. Even small openings allow escape. The fish can and will leap distances far beyond what seems possible for its size.
Health Notes Robust when water quality is maintained. Prone to stress if kept with active or boisterous tank mates that disturb the surface. Ensure it is consuming enough food, as refusal to eat is a common early sign of stress.
