Potamonautes sp.
Origin: Sub-Saharan Africa
Potamonautes sp. is a genus of fully aquatic freshwater crabs from sub-Saharan Africa, kept in biotope aquariums that replicate African river or stream habitats. Unlike many aquarium crabs that require terrestrial access, these are fully aquatic and can be maintained in standard aquarium setups without land areas — a significant advantage for aquarium keeping. Best housed in species tanks or with robust, non-aggressive fish large enough not to be threatened and that will not disturb the crabs during the vulnerable moulting period.
House in an aquarium (minimum 75 L) with smooth rocks, caves, and a soft sandy substrate for burrowing. Maintain pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 22–26°C, moderate hardness. Feed varied omnivore diet: sinking algae wafers, blanched vegetables, frozen shrimp, and quality catfish pellets. Provide hiding spaces for moulting — crabs are very vulnerable immediately after shedding. Avoid very aggressive fish tankmates. Fully aquatic — no land areas required.
