Potamonautes sp. (highland)
Also known as: African Highland River Crab, East African Mountain Crab
Origin: East Africa (highland streams)
Highland Potamonautes species from East Africa's montane stream systems are adapted to the cool, highly oxygenated, clear water of high-altitude rivers and streams in countries such as Kenya, Tanzania, and Ethiopia. They are typically smaller and more colourful than lowland relatives, with rich reddish-brown to deep orange-brown carapaces that stand out against light-coloured gravel substrate.
These highland crabs require cooler temperatures than typical tropical aquarium species and are not suitable for warm tanks. Their habitat in fast-flowing mountain streams means they appreciate good water flow and high oxygen levels, achieved through strong filtration and surface agitation. A mixed land-water setup with rocky substrate and highland plant species is ideal.
As with other Potamonautes, captive breeding is feasible through direct development. This group is of significant conservation interest as many highland species have restricted ranges and face habitat pressure from deforestation and agricultural runoff in East Africa.
Water: 18–24°C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 5–15, KH 2–10; cool, highly oxygenated highland-style water. Tank: minimum 60 L paludarium, smooth cobble, land area, strong aeration and flow. Feeding: omnivore — sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, frozen shrimp, leaf litter. Breeding: direct development; female broods eggs; provide hiding areas for juveniles. Compatibility: territorial — keep alone or as pair; not compatible with small shrimp.
