Hemichromis lifalili
Also known as: African Jewel Cichlid, Lifalili Jewel
Origin: Central Africa (Congo basin)
Hemichromis lifalili from the Congo basin is often considered the most vividly red of the jewel cichlids, with the body displaying an almost entirely crimson colouration overlaid with brilliant blue-green iridescent spots. It is a more water-quality-sensitive species than H. bimaculatus and requires a stable, well-maintained aquarium.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to medium hardness preferred. Tank: Minimum 100L; robust décor with caves and driftwood; avoid delicate plants. Feeding: Cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, earthworm, and live invertebrates. Behaviour: Extremely territorial and aggressive when spawning; forms tight pair bonds. Compatibility: Species tank strongly recommended; only compatible with very large, robust tankmates.
