Xenomystus nigri
Also known as: African Knife Fish, African Brown Knife Fish
Origin: Africa
Xenomystus nigri is the only member of the subfamily Xenomystinae and is native to the Nile, Congo, and Niger river basins. It is far smaller than the Clown Knife Fish and considerably more peaceful, making it suitable for a large community aquarium with robust tankmates. Its plain dark body and undulating swimming motion make it a subtle but captivating addition to an African biotope.
Water: 23-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard. Tank: Minimum 120L, dense plants or driftwood, dim lighting, hiding zones. Feeding: Carnivore; live and frozen bloodworm, Tubifex, small invertebrates; nocturnal feeder. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive toward conspecifics and similar-shaped fish; peaceful toward dissimilar species. Compatibility: Medium to large tetras, catfish, robust barbs; avoid other knife fish.
