Bryconaethiops macrops
Origin: Congo River basin, Central Africa
Bryconaethiops macrops, known as the African Longfin Tetra, is an unusual and rarely seen African characin from the Congo River basin — one of the very few tetra species that originates from Africa rather than South America. It has an elongated, moderately compressed silver body with notably large eyes that are adapted to the low-light conditions of shaded forest streams and river margins. Unlike the bright colours associated with South American tetras, Bryconaethiops macrops has subtle but elegant colouring that suits a natural, subdued Congo biotope aquarium. The species is peaceful and best maintained in groups of at least six in a species-specific or Congo biotope setup with other calm African fish, floating plants for diffused light, and gentle filtration.
Keep in groups of 6+ in a planted aquarium with subdued lighting, floating plants, and gentle water flow. Maintain soft, slightly acidic water (pH 5.5–7.0). Feed a varied diet including small flakes, micro pellets, frozen daphnia, and small invertebrates. Avoid housing with aggressive or fast-moving fish that may cause stress. Regular small water changes maintain water quality.
