Ancistrus agassizii
Also known as: Agassizi Pleco, L028 Pleco, Agassiz's Bristlenose
Origin: Río Ucayali, Peru
The Agassizi Pleco (L028) is a medium-sized loricariid from the upper Amazon tributaries of Peru, named in honour of the celebrated naturalist Louis Agassiz. It features a clean spotted pattern of dark brown spots on a lighter base and has a more graceful, slender body form than many related species. Its calm temperament makes it suitable for a wide range of community setups.
L028 is primarily herbivorous and thrives on a diet of algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, and blanched vegetables. It also appreciates driftwood for grazing and shelter. Unlike some more demanding L-numbers, the Agassizi Pleco adapts reasonably well to a range of water conditions, though it still benefits from good filtration and regular water changes.
This species is peaceful and can be kept alongside most South American community fish including tetras, corydoras, small cichlids, and other loricariids. It is not excessively territorial and can sometimes be kept in pairs or small groups if adequate cave structures are provided.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 24–28°C, GH 2–15, KH 1–8; adaptable but prefers clean water. Tank: 180 L minimum; driftwood, flat rock caves, fine to medium substrate. Feeding: Herbivore; algae wafers, spirulina, blanched zucchini, cucumber, and driftwood grazing. Breeding: Cave spawner; one of the more readily bred L-numbers under correct conditions. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent with South American community fish of all sizes.
