Cyprinus rubrofuscus
Origin: Captive bred (Japan)
Aka Bekko is a rare and visually striking koi variety that presents a solid deep red (aka) base body colour adorned with well-defined black sumi markings distributed across the body — creating an intense, bold two-tone contrast that stands out dramatically in a garden pond. In the broader Bekko classification, the red-based Aka Bekko is the rarest and most sought-after variant. The quality of the sumi markings — their depth of black, defined edges, and distribution — significantly affects the fish's value in competitive koi showing. As with all sumi-bearing varieties, the black markings in Aka Bekko may develop and intensify with age in good pond conditions.
Pond of at least 1,000 litres with high-quality filtration. Feed premium koi colour-enhancing food to maintain intensity of the red base colouration. Maintain stable, alkaline water conditions. Protect from predators with appropriate pond netting. Annual veterinary health checks are recommended.
