Akysis Catfish

Akysis filicauda is one of the most visually striking members of the family Akysidae, the Asian stream catfishes, bearing bold alternating yellow and black bands across its body and fins. This aposematic colouration warns potential predators of its venomous pectoral and dorsal fin spines, whose sting produces a pain response similar to a wasp sting — hence the common name. It is native to fast-flowing, clear hill streams of Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos.

In the aquarium, A. filicauda requires the cool, highly oxygenated, clean water conditions of its native hill-stream habitat. A strong powerhead providing directional current, fine smooth gravel or pebble substrate, and hiding places among flat rocks are ideal. It is nocturnal and secretive, rarely visible during daylight. Feeding on small live and frozen invertebrates is necessary — it will rarely accept dry foods.

Despite its micro-predator lifestyle, A. filicauda is not aggressive toward fish much larger than itself. It is, however, territorial toward conspecifics, and a single specimen per tank is generally safest unless the tank is large with many hiding places. This species is a gem for the hillstream or Southeast Asian torrent biotope specialist.

Water: 20–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, clean and well-oxygenated; strong directional current. Tank: 60 L minimum; smooth pebbles; flat rock caves; powerful flow. Feeding: Frozen bloodworm, daphnia, small brine shrimp; live invertebrates ideal. Breeding: Not documented in home aquaria. Compatibility: Peaceful toward larger fish; territorial toward own species; handle with care due to venomous spines.
