Symphysodon aequifasciatus var. (albino)
Also known as: Albino Discus, Albino Red-Eye Discus
Origin: Captive bred (originally Southeast Asian hatcheries)
The Albino Discus is a genetically distinct form resulting from a recessive mutation that eliminates melanin production across the body. The result is a pale cream-to-yellow fish with the hallmark crimson eyes of true albinism, giving it an otherworldly appearance among the colourful domestic strains.
Albino discus are more sensitive to light than pigmented strains; bright lighting causes stress and fading. They are best kept in dimly lit aquariums with plants and driftwood to provide shade. Their pale colouration also makes stress responses, disease signs, and nutritional deficiencies highly visible, which can be an advantage for attentive keepers.
Despite their delicate appearance, healthy albinos are robust fish when given correct conditions. Their rarity and unique look make them prized additions to any serious discus collection.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 5.5-7.0, very soft (1-6 dGH), KH 0-3; near-zero nitrates to preserve pale colour. Tank: Minimum 250 L, dim lighting essential, shade from floating plants or overhangs, dark substrate. Feeding: High-quality protein-rich discus pellets, white mosquito larvae, beefheart, frozen mysis. Breeding: Albino is recessive; pair two albinos for 100% albino offspring; spawns on vertical slate or cone. Compatibility: Peaceful; best with other discus or very calm, non-nippy species; avoid bright community fish.
