Poecilia reticulata var.
Also known as: Albino Red Guppy, Albino Guppy
Origin: Captive bred (originally Trinidad)
The Albino Red Guppy carries the albino gene which eliminates black melanin, producing distinctive red eyes and softening the body colouration to warm cream and orange tones. The tail retains full red-orange pigmentation, creating a gentle but vivid display fish.
Albino guppies tend to be slightly more sensitive to bright lighting than pigmented strains and appreciate subdued or planted tanks that reduce direct light stress. Their vision is also slightly reduced, so competition from more aggressive feeders should be minimised.
Despite these minor sensitivities, albino guppies are hardy livebearers that breed readily and are a popular choice for hobbyists wanting something a little different.
Water: 22–28 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderately hard; stable parameters important. Tank: 60 L minimum; subdued or diffused lighting preferred; dense planting for comfort. Feeding: Small, frequent meals of flake, micro-pellets, and live/frozen Artemia. Breeding: Prolific; albino trait inherited recessively; some fry will be normally pigmented if paired with wild-type. Compatibility: Peaceful; avoid aggressive feeders that outcompete these slower-seeing fish.
