Xiphophorus hellerii var.
Also known as: Albino Swordtail
Origin: Captive bred
The Albino Swordtail carries the recessive albino gene that eliminates black melanin production, resulting in distinctive red eyes, a pale cream to pink body, and a translucent sword fin that catches light delicately. The absence of dark pigmentation gives this fish a soft, almost ethereal quality compared to the vivid coloured strains.
Albino swordtails are slightly more sensitive to bright lighting than pigmented varieties and appreciate subdued aquarium lighting or well-planted tanks that provide shade. Despite this, they are as hardy and prolific as any other swordtail.
When crossed with red swordtails, albino offspring appear in approximately one quarter of fry from two heterozygous parents, making selective albino breeding an educational exercise for hobbyists interested in Mendelian genetics.
Water: 20–26 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate to hard water; stable parameters essential. Tank: 100 L minimum; subdued or diffused lighting; well-planted for shade and comfort. Feeding: Varied omnivore diet; no special requirements beyond avoiding overfeeding. Breeding: Prolific; albino gene is recessive; pair albino to albino for all-albino fry. Compatibility: Peaceful; avoid aggressive feeders that may outcompete these visually disadvantaged fish.
