Puntigrus tetrazona var.
Also known as: Albino Tiger Barb, White Tiger Barb
Origin: Southeast Asia (Sumatra, Borneo — captive bred albino variant)
The Albino Tiger Barb is a captive-bred colour variant of Puntigrus tetrazona, the Tiger Barb, one of the most iconic barbs in the aquarium hobby. The albino morph lacks the bold black vertical stripes of the wild-type but retains the characteristic body shape and active, spirited temperament. Instead, the body presents as pale cream to golden-white with a warm pinkish hue, complemented by vivid orange-red fins and the characteristic pink eyes of true albinism.
Tiger Barbs originate from the river basins of Sumatra and Borneo (Indonesia and Malaysia), where they inhabit clear, fast-flowing streams and rivers with moderate current. These are active, mid-water schooling fish that in the wild form large, dynamic groups. In the aquarium, their boisterous, fast-moving nature is part of their appeal but also their challenge — when kept in groups of fewer than six, they direct their energy at tank mates through fin-nipping.
Albino Tiger Barbs grow to approximately 7 cm and are relatively short-lived at 4–6 years. They are hardy, adaptable to a wide range of water conditions, and easy to feed, accepting virtually all aquarium foods. These qualities have made them a staple of the community aquarium trade for decades.
Their bold, attention-grabbing appearance and energetic swimming make them a focal species in the aquarium. When kept in a group of eight or more, the fin-nipping tendency is largely directed within the group, and they make excellent, manageable community fish with appropriate tank mates.
Tank Setup: A minimum 80-litre tank (75 cm length) for eight barbs. Provide moderate to strong water flow and plenty of open mid-water swimming space. Hardy plants along the sides and background, robust driftwood, and smooth rocks complete the setup. Avoid slow, long-finned species as tank mates.
Water Parameters: Temperature 22–26°C; pH 6.0–7.5; GH 5–15 °dH; KH 3–8 °dH. Adaptable but prefers slightly soft, acidic to neutral water with good oxygenation.
Feeding: Omnivore. Accepts flake food, micro pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, Daphnia, and blanched vegetables. Feed two to three times daily. Tiger Barbs are enthusiastic feeders and will beg at the surface.
Tank Mates: Best with other fast-moving, robust species: other barbs, danios, medium tetras, rainbowfish, loaches, and Corydoras. Avoid Bettas, Angelfish, Guppies, and other long-finned or slow-swimming species — they will be fin-nipped relentlessly.
Behaviour: Active, mid-water schooling fish. Kept in groups of 8+, the schooling instinct takes over and aggression is internalised. Do not keep fewer than six individuals. Males display to each other with parallel swimming and colour intensification.
Health: Hardy and disease-resistant. Main issues arise from poor water quality or inappropriate tank mates causing stress. Weekly 25% water changes maintain health.
