Pseudochromis aldabraensis
Origin: Indian Ocean, Aldabra Atoll
The Aldabra Dottyback (Pseudochromis aldabraensis) displays a vibrant solid orange body dramatically contrasted by a vivid blue stripe running from the snout through the eye, making it one of the most colourful dottybacks commonly available. It is hardy and relatively bold, typically defending its territory from the safety of caves and overhangs. Captive-bred specimens are widely available and strongly recommended — they are more disease-resistant and better acclimated to aquarium conditions than wild-caught fish.
House in a reef or FOWLR aquarium (minimum 80 L) with ample rockwork and caves for territory establishment. Maintain stable marine parameters (pH 8.1–8.4, SG 1.020–1.025, temperature 23–27°C). Feed high-protein carnivore foods: frozen Mysis shrimp, frozen Artemia, and quality marine carnivore pellets. Semi-aggressive toward similarly shaped or coloured fish — avoid keeping with other dottybacks. Generally reef-safe; may occasionally bother very small ornamental shrimp.
