Alestopetersius compressus
Also known as: Compressed Alestopetersius, Compressed Congo Tetra
Origin: Congo Basin, Central Africa
Alestopetersius compressus is a relatively slender and laterally compressed member of its genus from the Congo River basin, displaying a subtle but pleasing blue-silver iridescence across its flanks. Mature males develop delicate fin extensions on the dorsal and caudal fins, lending the species a refined, almost understated elegance that appeals to aquarists who prefer subtlety over vivid colour.
Care is consistent with other Alestopetersius species: soft to moderately hard water, open mid-water swimming space, a dark substrate, and groups of eight or more for natural schooling behaviour. This species is active and fast-moving, appreciating good filtration and moderate current. A planted perimeter and open centre provide the ideal balance of security and space.
Alestopetersius compressus accepts all standard community aquarium foods readily. It is an excellent choice for a Congo biotope alongside Congo Tetras, other Alestopetersius species, and Congo-endemic catfish and cichlids.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.2, temperature 23–27°C, GH 2–12, KH 1–6. Tank: Minimum 120 L, open mid-water, dark substrate, planted perimeter. Feeding: Omnivore; quality flake, micro-pellets, frozen daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. Breeding: Egg scatterer; soft slightly acidic water; fine-leaved plants or spawning mop used. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent with other Congo tetras, small cichlids, and Synodontis catfish.
