Alestopetersius nigropterus
Also known as: Black-finned Alestopetersius, Blackfin Congo Tetra
Origin: Congo Basin, Central Africa
Alestopetersius nigropterus is a visually refined Congo basin tetra characterised by its striking contrast between a polished silver body and jet-black dorsal and caudal fins. This bold chromatic contrast gives the fish an elegant, clean appearance that stands out even in a diverse community aquarium with many competing species.
Like other Alestopetersius species, it is a mid-water schooling fish best kept in groups of eight or more in a spacious, well-planted aquarium. Soft to moderately soft water with a neutral to slightly acidic pH is preferred, and the dark substrate enhances the contrast of its colouration. It is an active swimmer that appreciates open central swimming lanes.
Alestopetersius nigropterus is an unfussy omnivore that accepts quality flake, micro-pellets, and frozen invertebrates. It mixes excellently with other Congo tetras, small to medium cichlids, and Synodontis catfish, making it a versatile component of an African biotope community.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.2, temperature 23–27°C, GH 2–12, KH 1–6. Tank: Minimum 120 L, open mid-water lanes, dark substrate, planted perimeter. Feeding: Omnivore; quality flake, micro-pellets, frozen brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworm. Breeding: Egg scatterer; soft slightly acidic water; fine plant or spawning mop substrate. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent with other Congo tetras, small cichlids, and Synodontis catfish.
