Betta splendens (hybrid)
Also known as: Alien Betta, Wild Hybrid Betta, Smaragdina Hybrid
Origin: Southeast Asia
Alien bettas are produced by crossing Betta splendens with wild species such as Betta smaragdina or Betta mahachaiensis to introduce wild-type iridescent green and blue-green metallic colouration. The result is a fish with an alien, non-standard appearance, featuring scale patterns and body proportions not found in pure Betta splendens. They may be slightly hardier than standard show bettas.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to medium hardness — wild genetics may allow slightly wider pH tolerance. Tank: minimum 20L, well-planted; behavioural enrichment is important for these active fish. Feeding: carnivore — live or frozen insects, bloodworm, betta pellets; twice daily. Behaviour: males are aggressive; wild-hybrid bettas may have unpredictable temperament — monitor carefully. Compatibility: ideally species-only or with robust, fast-moving community fish.
