Atractosteus spatula
Also known as: Alligator Gar, Gator Gar, Manchac Gar
Origin: North America
Atractosteus spatula is native to the Gulf Coast drainages of the southern United States and northern Mexico, capable of exceeding 3m in the wild. It has two rows of teeth in the upper jaw, distinguishing it from all other gar species. Like all gars it breathes air using a primitive lung and can survive in low-oxygen conditions. Juvenile specimens are covered in a striking olive-and-cream patterning. An apex predator requiring sole housing or pairing only with fish it absolutely cannot consume. Legal regulations on keeping gar vary by country and US state.
Water: 14-30°C, pH 6.5-8.0, wide range tolerated; air breathing means surface access essential. Tank: Minimum 5000L for adult; very long tank; minimal decor; extremely robust construction required. Feeding: Carnivore; whole fish, large prawns, beef heart; train onto large sinking pellets where possible. Breeding: Spring spawner over vegetation; not practical in home aquaria. Compatibility: Solo or with fish absolutely too large to eat; an apex predator at all life stages.
