Allotoca dugesii
Origin: Mexico (Jalisco, Michoacan)
Allotoca dugesii, sometimes called the Bumblebee Goodeid or Duges' Allotoca, is a small goodeid livebearer native to the highland lakes and river systems of Jalisco and Michoacan in Mexico, where it is now critically endangered in the wild due to habitat loss, water extraction, and invasive species. In captivity, males display an attractive golden-orange suffusion on the posterior body and fins when in good breeding condition. Goodeids are unique among livebearers in that embryos are attached to a nutritional placenta-like structure (trophotaenia) inside the mother and born as fully developed miniature adults. Allotoca dugesii is notable for its adaptability to the cool, hard water conditions of its highland origin, making it suitable for aquarists without heated tanks. An important conservation species in European fishkeeping collections.
Keep in a species tank or with other similarly sized peaceful fish. Maintain slightly alkaline, moderately hard water at 18–24°C — no heater required in temperate rooms. Feed a varied diet of small flakes, micro pellets, daphnia, and small frozen foods. A well-planted aquarium gives fry shelter. Participate in conservation breeding programs if possible.
