Apistogramma allpahuayo
Also known as: Allpahuayo Apisto, White-sand Forest Dwarf Cichlid, Electric Blue Peruvian Apisto
Origin: Peru
Apistogramma allpahuayo is named for the Allpahuayo-Mishana National Reserve of Peru, a white-sand varillal forest reserve whose unique, mineral-leached soils produce extremely soft, blackwater streams — the exclusive habitat of this remarkable species. Males display extraordinary electric blue body iridescence that seems to glow in the dim light of their tannin-stained home environment.
This species is among the most habitat-specific of all Apistogramma, found only in areas of white-sand forest where water pH can drop below 4.5 and conductivity approaches zero. Replicating these conditions in captivity requires RO water, heavy tannin conditioning, and meticulous chemistry monitoring.
For specialists willing to invest in proper infrastructure, A. allpahuayo is one of the most visually spectacular and scientifically interesting dwarf cichlids in the hobby — a living representative of one of South America's most fragile ecosystems.
Water: Ultra-soft, blackwater extreme — pH 4.0–6.0, temperature 25–28°C, TDS under 30 ppm ideal. Tank: 60 L dedicated white-sand varillal biotope; pure RO water, leaf litter, alder cones mandatory. Feeding: Live micro-prey only initially; very slow transition to frozen; dry foods rarely accepted. Breeding: Cave spawner; among the most demanding breeding conditions in the genus. Compatibility: Species tank only; no tankmates recommended.
