Crenicichla alta
Also known as: Alta Pike Cichlid, Orinoco Pike Cichlid
Origin: Venezuela (Orinoco tributaries)
Crenicichla alta is a medium-large pike cichlid from the Orinoco tributaries of Venezuela, including the Casiquiare, Atabapo, and upper Orinoco systems. It has a more elegant, less robust body form than the large Guianan pike cichlids, with a neat dark lateral stripe running from snout to a prominent caudal spot. Females in breeding condition display a characteristic reddish mid-body band.
This species falls in the intermediate size range for Crenicichla, making it more manageable than the truly large species while still displaying the classic pike cichlid intensity and beauty. It requires soft, slightly acidic water, a deep sandy substrate with shelter options, and a carnivore diet. Regular partial water changes maintain the clean conditions this species appreciates.
Captive breeding has been documented. The cave-spawning pattern typical of the genus is employed, with the female closely guarding the egg mass and the male maintaining peripheral territory. Females show vivid colouration during breeding, a reliable indicator of impending spawning.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.5-7.2, soft to moderately soft (1-10 dGH); well-oxygenated; nitrates below 20 ppm. Tank: Minimum 350L; fine sand substrate, PVC pipe or driftwood caves for sheltering and spawning. Feeding: Sinking carnivore pellets, frozen prawn, fish chunks, earthworm; wean off live fish early. Breeding: Cave spawner; female guards eggs; red lateral band intensifies strongly on breeding females. Compatibility: Aggressive; keep only with fish too large to eat; large catfish and robust cichlids.
