Metynnis altidorsalis
Also known as: Altidorsalis Silver Dollar, Tall-finned Silver Dollar
Origin: Venezuela and Colombia, South America
Metynnis altidorsalis is named for the tall dorsal fin that develops prominently in mature males, giving them a more statuesque appearance than most other Metynnis. It inhabits soft, acidic river systems of Venezuela and Colombia and benefits from similarly conditioned aquarium water.
In group behaviour and feeding it mirrors other silver dollars closely, being a dedicated herbivore with a tendency to denude soft vegetation. However, its slightly more demanding water chemistry preference means it rewards keepers who provide properly conditioned water with superior colour and finnage development.
Not subject to piranha ownership restrictions.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.5-7.5, soft preferred (2-10 dGH); slightly acidic conditions produce the best finnage and colouration. Tank: Minimum 200L; tall format beneficial; school of 6+; avoid soft-leaved plants. Feeding: Herbivore; spirulina-based foods, blanched greens, cucumber; varied green diet is essential. Breeding: Male tall dorsal fin is the primary sexing criterion; egg-scatterer. Compatibility: Peaceful; ideal with larger South American cichlids and catfish; mixes well with other Metynnis species.
