Geophagus altifrons
Also known as: Altifrons Eartheater, High-forehead Eartheater
Origin: South America
Geophagus altifrons is a large, magnificently coloured eartheater from the Amazon basin. Males develop a pronounced hump and extended fin rays with age, creating a truly spectacular display fish. Best kept in groups over a deep sand substrate with gentle filtration.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.2, soft to moderately hard (2-10 dGH). Tank: Minimum 300L, deep fine sand substrate essential, minimal décor for open swimming space. Feeding: Omnivore; sinking pellets, live and frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, quality cichlid pellets. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive; males defend territories but generally peaceful toward similarly sized fish. Compatibility: Keep with other large, robust South American cichlids; avoid small or very timid species.
