Farlowella altissima
Also known as: Altissima Twig Catfish, Deep-bodied Twig Catfish
Origin: South America (Colombia)
Farlowella altissima is a Colombian endemic that stands out within the genus for its comparatively deeper body, the species name reflecting this slightly taller profile. It is found in moderate to slow-flowing rivers and their margins in Colombia, where it grazes biofilm and algae from submerged hard surfaces. Its spotted dorsal patterning is more pronounced than in several other Farlowella species.
In the aquarium this species demands the same rigorous water quality maintenance as other twig catfish, but its slightly stouter build makes it marginally more visible and easier to observe than the most slender congeners. It is best suited to a specialist Loricariidae aquarium or a well-planted community with very small, calm companions.
Farlowella altissima is not commonly available and is typically obtained through specialist importers or breeder networks. Its rarity in the trade is primarily a reflection of limited export from Colombia rather than any particular difficulty in captive maintenance.
Water: 23–27°C, pH 6.0–7.0, soft (GH 2–10); pristine water quality essential. Tank: 100 L minimum; driftwood and plants; avoid open, brightly lit tanks. Feeding: Algae wafers, fresh zucchini, spirulina; biofilm on wood preferred on introduction. Breeding: Presumably standard Farlowella egg-guarding; limited captive breeding data. Compatibility: Small peaceful species only; avoid anything boisterous.
