Altolamprologus calvus
Also known as: White Calvus, White Pearlscale Cichlid
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Altolamprologus calvus 'White' is a colour morph of the species presenting pale cream-to-white flanks overlaid with dark brown to black spotting and scale edging. This morph is equally compressed and architecturally fascinating as the Black form, and it offers a striking visual contrast when kept alongside dark-bodied tankmates.
The White Calvus originates from the same rocky Tanganyikan littoral habitat as the black form but from populations with naturally lighter base colouration. Captive-bred specimens are widely available and breed reliably in aquarium conditions.
Behaviour, diet, and breeding are identical to the Black Calvus. The White form is particularly effective in aquariums with dark substrate and rockwork, where its pale body stands out dramatically. A pair or trio in a well-arranged Tanganyika rockscape is a classic combination.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 7.8–9.0, GH 10–18, KH 8–16; stable alkaline chemistry essential for long-term health. Tank: 150 L minimum; dense rockwork with crevices and shells; dark substrate enhances white body contrast. Feeding: Small pellets, frozen Mysis, shrimp, and bloodworm; daily small feedings preferred. Breeding: Cave spawner in shells or rock crevices; 50–150 eggs; female is sole guardian; slow-growing fry. Compatibility: Peaceful with fish too large to eat; compatible with Julidochromis, Tropheus, and large Synodontis.
