Altolamprologus compressiceps 'Gold Head'

Altolamprologus compressiceps 'Gold Head' is distinguished from standard compressiceps by a brilliant golden-yellow to orange-yellow head and nape that contrasts dramatically with the dark, pearl-spotted flanks and fins. This colouration is consistent in captive-bred populations and deepens with age, particularly in well-fed dominant males.

Like all compressiceps, the Gold Head is laterally compressed, ambush-oriented, and slow-growing. It is found in rocky littoral habitats and uses crevices and shells for spawning. Its relatively small size compared to calvus makes it suitable for smaller Tanganyika setups from 120 L upwards.

The Gold Head is widely available from specialist cichlid breeders and is considered one of the most visually rewarding Altolamprologus variants. It pairs beautifully in aquarium displays with small Neolamprologus or Julidochromis species.

Water: 24–27°C, pH 7.8–9.0, GH 10–18, KH 8–16; hard alkaline water maintains yellow head colour. Tank: 150 L minimum; caves, crevices, and snail shells; rock piles with vertical face provide natural shelter. Feeding: Small cichlid pellets, frozen Mysis and bloodworm, live artemia; feed small amounts daily. Breeding: Cave spawner; 30–100 eggs; female guards fry in cave; fry slow-growing but hardy. Compatibility: Safe with most Tanganyika community fish too large to eat; excellent with Julidochromis and Neolamprologus.
