Altolamprologus compressiceps
Also known as: Sumbu Compressiceps, Sumbu Shell Cichlid
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Altolamprologus compressiceps 'Sumbu' is collected from the Sumbu area on the Zambian shore of Lake Tanganyika. This population is characterised by finer, denser white pearl spotting across the flanks and a slightly more elongated body profile compared to other compressiceps populations, giving it a graceful, streamlined appearance.
The Sumbu form is considered a classic among Tanganyika specialists and has been maintained in captive breeding programmes for decades. It breeds reliably in aquarium conditions and offspring maintain the population's characteristic fine speckling.
All compressiceps husbandry applies: moderate-sized aquarium with extensive rockwork and crevices, clean alkaline water, and a diet of small meaty foods. The Sumbu form integrates well in mixed Tanganyika community aquariums alongside Julidochromis, small Neolamprologus, and non-aggressive Synodontis.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 7.8–9.0, GH 10–18, KH 8–16; typical Tanganyika rocky-shore parameters. Tank: 150 L minimum; rockwork with tight crevices and Neothauma shells for spawning. Feeding: Small cichlid pellets; frozen Mysis, bloodworm, and shrimp; daily small portions. Breeding: Cave spawner; 30–100 eggs per spawn; female is sole guardian; slow fry development. Compatibility: Excellent in Tanganyika community tanks; safe with all fish too large to eat.
