Altolamprologus compressiceps
Also known as: Shell Compressiceps, Altolamprologus Shell Cichlid
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
This shell-dwelling ecotype of Altolamprologus compressiceps uses its uniquely laterally compressed body to enter and exit large gastropod shells in the sandy shallows of Lake Tanganyika. Females spawn inside the shell and males guard the territory. A captivating species that bridges the worlds of rocky-shore and shell-dwelling Tanganyika cichlids.
Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.8-9.0, hard alkaline water. Tank: 80L for a pair; sandy bottom with 2-3 large Neothauma or giant Helix shells. Feeding: Quality carnivore pellet or flake; frozen Mysis or Artemia; hand-feed to ensure it eats. Behaviour: Female broods inside shell; male is larger and guards the outer territory. Compatibility: Best as a species pair or with non-competing open-water Tanganyika cichlids.
