Pterophyllum altum
Also known as: Altum Angelfish, Deep Angelfish, Orinoco Angelfish
Origin: South America
Pterophyllum altum is the largest and most imposing true angelfish, native to the Orinoco and the upper Rio Negro. Its extreme body height and deeply notched forehead set it apart from all other angelfish. It demands pristine very soft acidic water and a tall aquarium but rewards its keeper with an unrivalled display.
Water: 27-31°C, pH 4.5-6.5, very soft water essential (0-6 dGH), low KH. Tank: Minimum 300L tall aquarium (60cm+), gentle filtration, blackwater conditions ideal. Feeding: Varied diet of live and frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, quality flake; refuses food under stress. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive; pairs bond strongly and defend spawning sites. Compatibility: Best with small peaceful blackwater species; avoid robust or nippy fish.
