Pterophyllum altum
Origin: Orinoco, Venezuela
Pterophyllum altum — the altum or Orinoco angelfish — is the tallest of the three angelfish species with an incredibly deep, laterally compressed body and long, flowing fins. It is significantly more demanding than P. scalare, requiring very soft, acidic water (pH 4.8–6.2) and stable conditions. Wild-caught specimens from the Orinoco and upper Rio Negro are available but challenging. An awe-inspiring display fish for expert biotope aquarists.
ADVANCED. pH 4.8–6.2. Very soft water (0–4 dGH). 300+ L tall tank (60+ cm height). Groups of 6+. Feed: live artemia, bloodworm, frozen mysis. Requires blackwater conditions.
