Origin: Captive bred
The Altum Cross Discus is an exceptional and highly controversial experimental hybrid produced by specialist European breeders experimenting with crossing Symphysodon discus with the influence of Pterophyllum altum (altum angelfish) lineages. The result is a fish displaying a taller, more angular body profile than standard discus with unique patterning that blends characteristics of both parent species. These hybrids are occasionally offered by a small number of Dutch and Belgian specialist breeders and generate significant interest among serious cichlid collectors due to their rarity and unusual appearance. Like pure discus, this hybrid demands very high water quality standards, warm temperatures, and careful nutrition. It is emphatically not a fish for beginners or casual aquarists.
Maintain at 28–31°C in very soft, acidic water (pH 5.8–6.8). Regular water changes of 20–30% every one to two days are essential to maintain the pristine conditions this fish requires. Feed multiple small meals daily of high-quality discus food, frozen beef heart, and bloodworms. Keep in groups of 5+ — solitary specimens become stressed. Provide a tall, spacious aquarium of at least 250 litres with low lighting and minimal decor stress.
