Serrasalmus altuvei
Also known as: Altuvei Piranha, Orange Piranha, Yellow Piranha
Origin: Orinoco tributaries, Venezuela
Serrasalmus altuvei is a small to medium-sized piranha from blackwater tributaries of the Orinoco in Venezuela, considered one of the most beautifully coloured piranhas in existence. Prime specimens display striking yellow-orange flanks with metallic iridescence that surpasses even Pygocentrus piraya in intensity.
Its blackwater origin means it requires very soft, acidic, tannin-stained water to thrive and display full colouration. Water hardness above 6 dGH and pH above 7.0 will stress the fish and bleach its colouration over time. It remains rare in the trade, commanding premium prices and requiring careful, experienced husbandry.
Piranha regulations vary; always confirm ownership is legal in your jurisdiction.
Water: 25-29°C, pH 4.5-6.5, very soft water essential (0-6 dGH); use RO water buffered with tannins; avoid any hard alkaline conditions. Tank: Minimum 300L for a single specimen; blackwater setup with peat filtration or Indian almond leaves; dim lighting enhances colour display. Feeding: Carnivore; fresh prawns, fish fillet, frozen bloodworm for juveniles; feed every 2-3 days; pristine water quality critical. Breeding: No captive breeding records; its extreme rarity and value make attempts inadvisable without specialist experience. Compatibility: Solo housing only; a rare and valuable fish — ensure legal compliance in your jurisdiction before purchase.
