Amatitlania siquia
Also known as: Siquia Convict, Siquia Cichlid
Origin: Nicaragua, Costa Rica
Amatitlania siquia was described as a distinct species from the Pacific slope of Nicaragua and Costa Rica following a taxonomic revision of the Convict Cichlid complex. It closely resembles A. nigrofasciata but tends to show slightly different band patterns and coloration depending on population. As with all Amatitlania, it is a robust cave brooder with strong biparental care.
The species inhabits rivers and streams draining into the Pacific, adapting to a range of water conditions from clear highland streams to murky coastal lowlands. This wide ecological tolerance translates into excellent aquarium hardiness — A. siquia tolerates parameter variations that would stress more delicate cichlid species.
For hobbyists seeking something slightly different from the standard Convict while maintaining the same ease of care and breeding behavior, A. siquia presents an interesting alternative, particularly for those interested in the taxonomy and biogeography of Central American cichlids.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.5–8.0, GH 5–20, KH 2–10; extremely tolerant of water parameter variation. Tank: 120 L minimum; caves, rocks, moderate structure; live plants may be nipped. Feeding: Omnivore — accepts virtually any food; varied diet of pellets, frozen foods, and greens. Breeding: Cave brooder; extremely prolific; very aggressive brood defense; separate fry when independent. Compatibility: Best in species tanks during breeding; may be housed with robust fish of similar size outside breeding.
