Monocirrhus polyacanthus
Also known as: Amazon Leaffish, South American Leaffish
Origin: Amazon and Orinoco basins, South America
Monocirrhus polyacanthus is found throughout the Amazon and Orinoco river systems in blackwater habitats rich in tannins and leaf litter. Its remarkably convincing leaf mimicry extends to a chin barbel that resembles a leaf stalk, cryptic brown colouration with faux leaf vein markings, and a drifting head-down swimming posture. It is a demanding species requiring soft, acidic water and a live food diet.
Water: 24–28 °C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft and acidic blackwater; tannin-stained conditions preferred. Tank: 100 L minimum; leaf litter substrate, dark water, driftwood, and dim lighting. Feeding: Strictly carnivorous; live feeder shrimp and small fish required; very rarely accepts frozen foods. Behaviour: Solitary ambush predator; slow-drifting; do not disturb when not feeding. Compatibility: Species tank only; eats any fish that fits in its mouth.
