Ambiacus Cory

Corydoras ambiacus is a boldly patterned cory from the Ambiyacu River in Peru, a tributary of the Amazon near the Colombian border. Its large, irregular dark brown to black blotches on a pale cream body give it a striking, high-contrast appearance that distinguishes it from the finely spotted or striped patterns of related species. The blotching extends onto the dorsal and caudal fins.

Despite its impressive appearance, C. ambiacus is a completely peaceful and easygoing community fish. It inhabits clear to slightly turbid Amazon tributaries with sandy substrates and tolerates a wide range of water conditions — qualities that carry over well to aquarium life. It is one of the hardier Peruvian cories and is a good choice for intermediate-level aquarists.

Keep in groups of six or more; the species is social and more active in a school. Provide a fine sand substrate, regular partial water changes, and a varied diet of sinking pellets, frozen invertebrates, and blanched vegetables. Widely available through Peruvian importers, though less commonly seen than the most popular cory species.

Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 22–26°C; adaptable and tolerant of varied conditions. Tank: 80 L with fine sand substrate, some plant decoration, and clear foraging areas. Feeding: Sinking pellets, Repashy Community Plus, frozen bloodworm, and blanched zucchini. Breeding: Typical cory spawning; cool water change trigger; moderately easy. Compatibility: Excellent community fish; well suited to Amazonian community tanks of all levels.
