Amphilophus rostratus
Also known as: Amphilophus rostratus
Origin: Central America
Amphilophus rostratus is distributed across Atlantic-slope rivers and lakes of Nicaragua and Honduras. It is distinguished from relatives by its noticeably longer, more pointed snout — an adaptation for rooting through soft substrate and leaf litter in search of invertebrates. Adults develop a robust, deep body and can be territorial. Its snout shape makes it an interesting species for cichlid enthusiasts wanting something less commonly kept.
Water: 24–30°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate to hard (GH 10–20). Tank: 400L+ for adults; deep sandy substrate for sifting; driftwood and rock caves. Feeding: Omnivore; pellets, earthworms, invertebrates, and occasional plant matter. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive; sifts substrate actively; pairs defend territories during spawning. Compatibility: Suitable with other large robust Central American cichlids of comparable size.
