Puntigrus anchisporus
Origin: Borneo
Puntigrus anchisporus, the Anchor Barb, is a close relative of the Tiger Barb (Puntigrus tetrazona) from the rivers of Borneo, distinguishable by subtle differences in banding pattern density and a marginally more elongated body form. In general behaviour and care requirements it closely mirrors the Tiger Barb, making it accessible to beginner fishkeepers who are already familiar with the more common species. Like all barbs in this genus, it is best kept in groups of six or more individuals — schooling reduces the likelihood of individual fish targeting tankmates' fins, which is characteristic behaviour when kept in insufficient numbers. An active, lively fish that adds movement and interest to the mid-water region of the aquarium.
Keep in groups of 6+ to minimise fin-nipping behaviour. Avoid housing with long-finned fish such as bettas, angelfish, or veil-tail guppies that are particularly vulnerable to barb harassment. Provide a well-filtered tank with some current. Feed a varied diet of flakes, small pellets, and frozen foods. Maintain good water quality with regular water changes.
