Synodontis angelicus
Also known as: Angel Squeaker, Polka-dot Synodontis, Spotted Squeaker
Origin: Lower Congo River
Synodontis angelicus is widely considered one of the most beautiful catfish in the world. Native to the lower Congo River and its deep, fast-moving stretches, it is characterised by a near-black body densely covered in small white or cream spots that form an intricate reticular pattern. Juveniles are the most intensely marked; the pattern tends to become bolder though sometimes less dense with age.
It is a moderately large and somewhat territorial species that does best when each individual has its own cave to retreat to. Despite occasional squabbles over territory it is rarely seriously aggressive toward non-catfish tankmates and can be kept with robust medium to large community fish.
This species is not commonly bred in captivity and most specimens in the trade are wild-caught from the Congo, so careful acclimatisation and quarantine are strongly recommended upon acquisition.
Water: 22–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 5–15, KH 2–8). Tank: 250 L minimum; large cave per individual; low to moderate flow; dim lighting reduces stress during settling-in. Feeding: High-quality sinking pellets, frozen invertebrates, prawn; supplement with Spirulina wafers. Breeding: Rarely bred in captivity; cave spawner; soft acidic water thought to trigger spawning. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive toward conspecifics; peaceful with robust non-catfish tankmates; give each fish its own territory.
