Pterophyllum scalare
Origin: South America (cultivated variety)
The Gold Angelfish is a colour form of Pterophyllum scalare selectively bred to emphasise warm golden-yellow pigmentation, with a gleaming body that catches the aquarium light beautifully. The classic triangular body shape, elegant flowing fins, and confident presence of the angelfish combined with the warm golden colouration creates a compelling centrepiece fish for medium to large community aquariums. Angelfish are true cichlids — intelligent and territorial during breeding, though generally manageable in community setups outside of spawning activity. The Gold form has the same care requirements as all P. scalare colour varieties, preferring soft to moderately hard water and a well-structured aquarium with tall plants and vertical hiding spaces that suit its tall, disc-shaped body.
Provide a tall aquarium of at least 150 litres with tall plants (Vallisneria, Amazon sword), driftwood, and vertical hiding spaces. Maintain stable, warm water. Feed a varied diet including flakes, small cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworms, and artemia. Avoid very small tankmates (neons, small rasboras) that may be eaten. Angelfish pairs bond strongly and should be kept together once paired. Perform regular water changes.
