Pterophyllum scalare
Origin: South America (cultivated variety)
The Koi Angelfish is a captive-bred colour variety of Pterophyllum scalare developed to mimic the iconic multicoloured pattern of koi pond fish, featuring bold patches of orange, white, and black against the classic tall angelfish body form. The striking trichromatic colouration creates a highly visible, eye-catching display fish that draws immediate attention in an aquarium, making it one of the most popular angelfish varieties sold in European aquarium stores. Each Koi Angelfish individual has a unique pattern, adding to the collector appeal of the variety. Care requirements are identical to all other P. scalare colour forms — a tall, spacious aquarium with excellent water quality and thoughtful tankmate selection.
Provide a tall aquarium of at least 150 litres. Feed varied diet of flakes, pellets, bloodworms, and artemia. Avoid very small nano-sized tankmates. For stable, intense colouration maintain clean water and high-quality varied diet. Regular water changes of 20–25% weekly. Pairs bond strongly — keep bonded pairs together.
