Pterophyllum scalare
Origin: South America (Amazon basin, cultivated variety)
The Silver Angelfish is the classic, original colour form of Pterophyllum scalare and arguably the most iconic freshwater aquarium fish in the world. Its triangular, disc-shaped body, long flowing dorsal and ventral fins, and silver colouration accented by three bold vertical dark bars have made it a staple of aquarium keeping for over a century. Wild P. scalare are found in the slow-moving Amazon basin and its tributaries, where their laterally compressed body form allows them to navigate through tall aquatic grass beds and hover motionlessly among vertical plant stems. In captivity, Silver Angelfish are hardy, intelligent, and long-lived when provided appropriate conditions, making them excellent intermediate community fish. Their intelligence means they can recognise their keeper and respond to feeding time consistently.
Provide a tall aquarium of at least 150 litres (the taller the better — 60cm minimum height recommended). Tall plants such as Amazon sword, Vallisneria, and large Java fern complement the body shape. Avoid small tetras and nano fish. Feed flakes, pellets, frozen bloodworms, and artemia. Bonded pairs should be kept together. Perform regular water changes and maintain stable conditions.
