Oryzias latipes
Also known as: Aodai Medaka, Blue Medaka, Blue Robe Medaka
Origin: Japan (cultivated variety)
The Aodai ('blue robe') medaka is a Japanese cultivar of Oryzias latipes bred for heightened iridophore expression, giving the body a strong metallic blue sheen that varies in intensity with lighting angle. It was developed by selective breeding of fish with naturally higher blue iridescence and is particularly popular in contemporary Japanese medaka keeping culture.
Water: 10–28 °C, pH 7.0–8.5; tolerates mild brackish; very tolerant and undemanding. Tank: 20 L minimum; side or top lighting best showcases the metallic blue sheen. Feeding: Omnivorous micro feeder; medaka pellets, flake, Daphnia, baby brine shrimp. Behaviour: Peaceful surface schooler; males display shimmer to rivals in attractive fin-spread contests. Compatibility: All medaka varieties; small nano fish; adult shrimp.
