Apistogramma agassizii
Origin: South America (Amazon basin, captive bred)
The Red Tail form of Apistogramma agassizii is a selectively developed variant of one of the most popular and widespread dwarf cichlids in the European hobby, prized for the male's brilliant scarlet-red caudal fin that creates a dramatic contrast against the blue-silver body with yellow ventral highlights. In nature, Apistogramma agassizii inhabits the Peruvian and Brazilian Amazon across a vast range, but captive-bred specimens are produced to emphasise the most vibrant fin colouration possible. Like all Apistogramma species, it is a cave spawner — females choose a small cave or shelter to deposit eggs, which they then guard tenaciously. The Agassizii Red Tail is an excellent dwarf cichlid for aquarists who want a colourful, behaviourally interesting species without the space requirements of larger cichlids.
Provide soft, slightly acidic water (pH 5.5–7.0) with abundant plant cover, driftwood, and small cave entrances (coconut shells, clay pots, cave decorations). Keep as a pair or harem (1 male to 2–3 females). The female becomes intensely protective of her eggs and fry — provide hiding spaces for subordinate fish during breeding. Feed micro pellets, small frozen foods including daphnia, cyclops, and bloodworms, and high-quality flake.
