Apistogramma allpahuayo
Also known as: Allpahuayo Apistogramma, Mishana Dwarf Cichlid
Origin: South America (Peru, Allpahuayo-Mishana)
Apistogramma allpahuayo is a small and delicate species endemic to the Allpahuayo-Mishana national reserve near Iquitos, Peru, a region famous for its extreme blackwater habitats. Males develop vivid yellow and blue colouration only under the soft, very acidic conditions that mimic their natural environment. This is a specialist species for experienced keepers willing to provide near-RO water quality.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 4.5-6.5, GH 0-4, KH 0-1; near-distilled blackwater essential. Tank: 60L minimum; heavy tannin staining with leaf litter, driftwood, and dim lighting. Feeding: Omnivore; live artemia nauplii, micro-worms, and frozen copepods recommended. Behaviour: Peaceful and shy; males display elaborate fin fanning to females. Compatibility: Species tank strongly recommended; only very small, peaceful tank mates suitable.
