Apistogramma atahualpa
Also known as: Atahualpa Apistogramma, Sunset Apistogramma
Origin: South America (Peru)
Apistogramma atahualpa is a stunning species from slow-moving blackwater streams in the Peruvian Amazon. Males display a vivid yellow-orange body with red borders on the dorsal and caudal fins, and a spectacular lyre-shaped tail. It is an active cave spawner and females become intensely yellow-black during brood care, one of the most vivid breeding dresses in the genus.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.5-7.0, GH 1-8, KH 0-3; soft acidic water brings out best colour. Tank: 80L minimum; multiple caves and leaf litter create natural conditions. Feeding: Omnivore; live and frozen small invertebrates key for conditioning. Behaviour: Males hold harems; females become very aggressive when guarding fry. Compatibility: Ideal with small soft-water tetras and pencilfish.
