Origin: South America (Peru, Rio Ucayali)
Apistogramma baenschi, commonly called the Inka Apistogramma, originates from the Rio Ucayali system in Peru. Males display vivid yellow-gold flanks with distinctive black suborbital stripes and elaborate dorsal fin extensions. It is a cave-spawning harem breeder and females develop a striking yellow-black breeding dress when guarding eggs.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.5-7.0, GH 1-8, KH 0-3; soft and slightly acidic water preferred. Tank: 80L minimum; caves, leaf litter, and fine-leaved plants essential. Feeding: Omnivore; live and frozen small invertebrates alongside quality pellets. Behaviour: Males territorial but not overly aggressive; harem groups work well. Compatibility: Pairs well with small tetras, pencilfish, and otocinclus.
