Apistogramma barlowi
Also known as: Barlow's Apistogramma, Barlowi Dwarf Cichlid
Origin: South America (Peru)
Apistogramma barlowi is a recently formally described species from the Peruvian Amazon, though it had been traded under various provisional names for some years. Males are notably stocky for the genus and display intense yellow-golden colouration with broad dark suborbital markings and vivid fin colour. It proves a rewarding and fairly manageable species in well-maintained soft-water aquaria.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.5-7.0, GH 1-8, KH 0-3; soft slightly acidic water preferred. Tank: 80L minimum; caves, plant cover, and fine sandy substrate recommended. Feeding: Omnivore; accepts frozen bloodworms, artemia, and quality pellets. Behaviour: Males defend territories; forms harems in larger tanks. Compatibility: Works well with small peaceful soft-water tetras and catfish.
