Apistogramma brevis
Also known as: Compact Apistogramma, Brevis Dwarf Cichlid
Origin: South America (Brazil, Rio Sao Francisco)
Apistogramma brevis is native to the Rio Sao Francisco drainage in northeastern Brazil, a region with somewhat different water chemistry to the main Amazon basin. This background gives it a useful tolerance of harder and more neutral water conditions. Males display a yellow-olive body with a prominent black lateral stripe and well-developed fin extensions at maturity.
Water: 23-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, GH 3-12, KH 1-5; adapts to moderate water hardness well. Tank: 60L minimum; caves and plant cover; fine sand substrate preferred. Feeding: Omnivore; accepts a broad range of dry, frozen, and live foods. Behaviour: Males territorial but not aggressive; manageable in harem or pair setups. Compatibility: Good community species with tetras, corydoras, and small peaceful fish.
